Start with the official 12306 English website, then plan how you will reach the station shown on the booking. Save the confirmation and carry the original passport throughout the trip.

What 12306 supports

China Railway’s English FAQ says valid foreign passports can be used for real-name ticketing. The English website accepts foreign passports and offers ticket purchase, changes and refunds. Station ticket counters are another official purchase channel.

An e-ticket is tied to the identity document used to buy it. You must show that document for station entry, boarding and exit. A printed itinerary or reimbursement receipt is not a boarding ticket. Check the live terms for changes and refunds; availability and fees depend on the booking and timing.

Prepare a booking sheet

Before searching, write down the date, intended destination and time you need to arrive. For a business meeting, work backwards from the meeting address. A quicker train can still produce a slower overall journey if its arrival station is inconvenient.

Use this sequence to reduce avoidable mistakes:

  1. Create your account early enough to resolve any verification prompts.
  2. Enter passenger details carefully from the passport, following the site’s name fields.
  3. Compare the full departure and arrival station names with your map.
  4. Review the date, train, class and passenger before paying.
  5. Confirm that the order shows a completed booking and save its details.

Do not treat a search result, payment attempt or pending request as a confirmed seat. If something is unclear, resolve it through the booking channel before arranging a tight onward connection.

Give the station its own time allowance

Plan separate time for the road or metro journey, finding the correct entrance, security, document checks and locating the departure gate. For a first visit, build a generous buffer and follow the station’s actual boarding cutoff. The departure time is not a target arrival time at the building.

Keep the train number and booking record easy to show staff. If an automated gate does not read your passport, ask for the staffed checking route. Avoid joining another long queue without confirming what it is for.

For the journey to the station, see the metro guide or save a taxi destination that matches your booked station exactly.

If online setup fails

Take the passport and your intended itinerary to a staffed station ticket counter with time to spare. Bring an alternative departure choice in case your preferred train has no seats. For an existing order, keep the order number and payment record together so staff can understand what happened.

Crossing from Hong Kong

Cross-border rail also involves immigration formalities. Read our Hong Kong to Shenzhen guide before setting your station arrival time. A train reservation and permission to cross the border are separate parts of the plan.
