Hong Kong to Shenzhen for the First Time

For a first trip, choose the crossing that leaves you closest to your actual Shenzhen destination, not simply the one you have heard of. Lo Wu connects directly to Luohu, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line connects to Futian Port, and high-speed rail arrives at Futian or Shenzhen North. Road crossings can be useful for coaches, buses or late-night plans.

Pick the crossing backwards from your destination

Lo Wu to Luohu

Take Hong Kong’s East Rail Line to Lo Wu, complete Hong Kong and Mainland clearance, then enter Shenzhen beside Luohu Station on Metro Line 1. This is often practical for Luohu, the east side of central Shenzhen, or a first trip where a direct metro connection matters. It can be busy at weekends and holidays.

Lok Ma Chau Spur Line to Futian Port

Take the East Rail Line to Lok Ma Chau, clear both sides, and follow signs to Futian Checkpoint Station on Shenzhen Metro Lines 4 and 10. This is often a logical choice for central Futian and northern connections.

Do not confuse Lok Ma Chau Spur Line with the road-based Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang crossing. They have different transport arrangements and operating hours.

High-speed rail from West Kowloon

A reserved high-speed rail ticket can be efficient for Futian or Shenzhen North. At Hong Kong West Kowloon, passengers complete real-name checking, security and both immigration formalities before boarding. MTR advises passport holders and peak-period travellers to allow extra processing time, and ticket checks close before departure. Use the same identity document used for booking.

Road crossings

Shenzhen Bay, Heung Yuen Wai/Liantang, Man Kam To and Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang serve different bus, coach and vehicle routes. They are useful only when the onward connection works for you. Check the Hong Kong Transport Department’s current access pages and the Immigration Department’s operating hours on the day of travel.

Prepare before leaving Hong Kong

Cross-border departure checklist

• ✓ Valid passport or other accepted travel document
• ✓ Valid visa, permit or confirmed visa-free eligibility for Mainland China
• ✓ Train ticket tied to the same document, if using high-speed rail
• ✓ Shenzhen address and destination name saved in Chinese
• ✓ Mobile data that works on both sides of the boundary
• ✓ At least two payment methods, including an RMB fallback
• ✓ Enough time before the control point or train check-in closes

Immigration lines are not predictable. A short train ride does not mean a short door-to-door journey. Build in time for walking, queues, forms, security and finding the first Shenzhen connection.

Complete the crossing

Follow signs for Hong Kong departure, then Mainland arrival. Keep your travel document accessible until you have fully left the controlled area. Answer immigration questions accurately and keep accommodation details available. Do not photograph inside immigration or customs-controlled areas unless signs clearly permit it.

Get moving after arrival

At Luohu or Futian Port, follow signs to the metro and use the first-time Shenzhen Metro guide. At a road port, confirm the exact bus stop or ride-hailing pickup zone before leaving the building. Drivers cannot always stop directly outside a checkpoint.

Save the hotel or building pin in Chinese. If you use a car, compare the plate in the app with the arriving vehicle and read the Didi and taxi guide.

Solve payments before the gate

Carry RMB cash or another backup because a linked card can still fail for a particular merchant or service.

If your plan runs late

Do not assume every crossing is open around the clock. The Hong Kong Immigration Department publishes current control-point hours and identifies the overnight passenger option. Check that page before leaving, then verify the last practical Hong Kong and Shenzhen transport connection—not only the border closing time.
