Hong Kong to Shenzhen: Border Crossings, Trains and Buses

Travelling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen is easiest when you choose the route by your final Shenzhen destination. Use East Rail and cross at Lo Wu for Luohu or Lok Ma Chau for Futian; take high-speed rail from West Kowloon for Futian or Shenzhen North; or use Shenzhen Bay for western Nanshan and Shekou. Immigration time matters more than the short train ride, so compare the complete door-to-door journey.

Lo Wu to Luohu Port (罗湖口岸)

Take Hong Kong’s East Rail Line to Lo Wu, complete Hong Kong and Mainland clearance, then enter Shenzhen beside Luohu Station (罗湖站) on Metro Line 1. This is often practical for Luohu, the east side of central Shenzhen, or a first trip where a direct metro connection matters. It can be busy at weekends and holidays.

Lok Ma Chau Spur Line to Futian Port (福田口岸)

Take the East Rail Line to Lok Ma Chau, clear both sides, and follow signs to Futian Checkpoint Station (福田口岸站) on Shenzhen Metro Lines 4 and 10. This is often a logical choice for central Futian and northern connections.

Do not confuse Lok Ma Chau Spur Line with the road-based Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang crossing. They have different transport arrangements and operating hours.

High-speed rail from West Kowloon

A reserved high-speed rail ticket can be efficient for Futian or Shenzhen North. At Hong Kong West Kowloon, passengers complete real-name checking, security and both immigration formalities before boarding. MTR advises passport holders and peak-period travellers to allow extra processing time, and ticket checks close before departure. Use the same identity document used for booking.

Directly from Hong Kong International Airport

If you land at Hong Kong International Airport, choose between two very different airport connections before you leave the arrival flow:

• SkyPier Terminal ferry: This is an airside, same-day transfer option to Shenzhen Shekou or Shenzhen Fuyong. It is for eligible transfer passengers only: do not pass Hong Kong immigration or collect your baggage first. The airport requires a flight record, ferry ticket and valid travel document; it also publishes airline, baggage and minimum-time conditions. Check the operator’s live timetable before relying on it.
• Cross-boundary coach: If you have entered Hong Kong, have baggage to collect, or the ferry does not fit your itinerary, coaches leave from the Mainland/Macao Transport and Travel Services Centre at Terminal 2. They serve Shenzhen via several land ports, including Shenzhen Bay. Routes, fares, port choice and operating times vary by operator, so confirm the actual Shenzhen stop and the last practical departure before buying a ticket.

The ferry can be the calmer route when it matches your flight and destination, but it is not a shortcut you can switch to after clearing immigration. For a road-port arrival, save the final address in Chinese and plan the first metro or ride-hailing connection before you leave the terminal.

Road crossings

Shenzhen Bay, Heung Yuen Wai/Liantang, Man Kam To and Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang serve different Hong Kong bus, coach and vehicle routes. Their Shenzhen-side connections are not the same:

• Shenzhen Bay (深圳湾口岸): after clearance, follow signs towards Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint Station (深圳湾口岸站) on Metro Line 13. The official guide lists Exits B and C for the port connection.
• Heung Yuen Wai/Liantang (莲塘口岸): Liantang Checkpoint Station (莲塘口岸站) connects with Shenzhen Metro Lines 2 and 8.
• Man Kam To/Wenjindu (文锦渡口岸) and Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang (皇岗口岸): check the current bus, coach, shuttle or vehicle connection rather than assuming a direct metro transfer.

Check the Hong Kong Transport Department’s current access pages and the Immigration Department’s operating hours on the day of travel. A nearby metro does not guarantee that its last train is as late as the control point.

Prepare before leaving Hong Kong

Cross-border departure checklist

• ✓ Valid passport or other accepted travel document
• ✓ Valid visa, permit or confirmed visa-free eligibility for Mainland China
• ✓ Train ticket tied to the same document, if using high-speed rail
• ✓ Shenzhen address and destination name saved in Chinese
• ✓ Mobile data that works on both sides of the boundary
• ✓ At least two payment methods, including an RMB fallback
• ✓ Enough time before the control point or train check-in closes

Immigration lines are not predictable. A short train ride does not mean a short door-to-door journey. Build in time for walking, queues, forms, security and finding the first Shenzhen connection.

Set up the essentials before the border

Install and test a map app, Didi, and at least one mobile wallet while you have dependable connectivity. Amap is commonly useful for local directions, while iPhone users may also prefer Apple Maps; whichever app you choose, save the destination, building entrance and nearest metro exit in Chinese.

Complete the crossing

Follow signs for Hong Kong departure, then Mainland arrival. Keep your travel document accessible until you have fully left the controlled area. Answer immigration questions accurately and keep accommodation details available. Do not photograph inside immigration or customs-controlled areas unless signs clearly permit it.

Get moving after arrival

At Luohu or Futian Port, follow signs to the metro and use the first-time Shenzhen Metro guide. Shenzhen Bay connects with Line 13, and Liantang connects with Lines 2 and 8. At a port without a direct metro connection—or when rail service has ended—confirm the exact bus, shuttle or ride-hailing pickup zone before leaving the building. Drivers cannot always stop directly outside a checkpoint.

Save the hotel or building pin in Chinese. If you use a car, compare the plate in the app with the arriving vehicle and read the Didi and taxi guide.

If your plan runs late

Do not assume every crossing is open around the clock. The Hong Kong Immigration Department publishes current control-point hours and identifies the overnight passenger option. Check that page before leaving, then verify the last practical Hong Kong and Shenzhen transport connection—not only the border closing time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to enter Shenzhen from Hong Kong?

Hong Kong and Mainland China have separate immigration systems. Permission to enter Hong Kong does not by itself permit entry to Shenzhen. Requirements depend on nationality, travel document, purpose and current visa-free policies. Check the National Immigration Administration or the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your case before travel.

Can I rely on a five-day Shenzhen Visa on Arrival?

No. National Immigration Administration guidance says Shenzhen port visa authorities may issue special economic zone tourist visas with a limited stay, but port-visa decisions, documentary requirements and eligibility are individual. Its port-visa FAQ also describes supporting documents for the reason for entry. Do not build a non-refundable trip around an assumption that a visa will be issued at the boundary.

Which crossing is easiest for a first visit?

There is no single best crossing. Lo Wu is practical for Luohu, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line for central Futian, and high-speed rail for Futian or Shenzhen North. From Hong Kong International Airport, compare the eligibility-limited airside ferry with cross-boundary coaches. Choose from the Shenzhen endpoint backwards.

Is Shenzhen realistic as a day trip?
