How to Use Didi and Taxis in Shenzhen

Use Didi for a mapped pickup and destination; use a street taxi when one is already available and you can show the destination in Chinese. Neither option has one dependable citywide price: time, distance, road tolls, waiting, demand, vehicle class and route can affect the final amount.

Set up Didi before you need it

Find the official mainland-China Didi app. Its current store listing advertises an English interface, login with global mobile numbers, bilingual driver messaging, international-bank-card options and in-app English support. Features can differ by app-store region and account, so test registration and payment before an airport or border arrival.

1. Register with a number that can receive SMS messages.
2. Switch the interface to English if necessary.
3. Add a payment method and complete any bank verification.
4. Save your hotel, home or office in Chinese.
5. Allow location access while booking so the pickup pin is accurate.

You may also encounter Didi through Alipay or WeChat mini programs. Their available features and payment route can differ from the standalone app.

Choose a pickup that a car can reach

The blue location dot is not always a legal or practical stopping point. At malls, railway stations, airports, checkpoints and large office compounds, use the labelled ride-hailing zone, gate number or roadside pickup point shown in the app.

After a driver accepts:

• compare the map pin with where you are physically standing;
• send the gate or landmark through in-app chat;
• look for the plate and vehicle details shown in the app; and
• be ready to show the last digits of the booking phone number if the driver asks to confirm the passenger.

Verify before getting in

Safe pickup check

• ✓ The licence plate matches the app
• ✓ The vehicle and driver details are consistent
• ✓ The driver can see your destination in the booking
• ✓ Your seat belt works and is fastened
• ✓ A trusted person has the trip details when appropriate

Do not board solely because someone calls out a destination. Use the in-app safety and support tools for the service you booked. In an immediate emergency in China, call 110.

Use a street taxi without a long conversation

Show the destination’s Chinese name and map pin before the trip begins. Use a licensed taxi from an official rank where possible. Confirm that the meter is being used rather than negotiating an uncertain verbal fare. Keep the receipt if you may need to recover an item or question the ride.

Have small RMB notes as a fallback, but ask before the journey if you intend to pay cash. Mobile payment is common. The central government’s visitor payment guide says cash, bank cards and mobile payment remain available options, but acceptance of a particular foreign card can vary.

Handle payment failures

Do not leave a Didi balance unresolved. Open the trip record, try another supported method, and use in-app support if the displayed charge appears wrong. A foreign card can fail because of issuer controls, identity checks, network problems or the payment scenario.

When the metro is the better answer

Choose rail during heavy road traffic, when a destination is close to a station, or when pickup zones around a venue are congested. Choose a car for luggage, a hard-to-reach address, a group, or the first or last part of a journey. The useful question is not “Which is always cheaper?” but “Which removes the most uncertainty for this trip?”
