Flying from Shenzhen with Power Banks and Battery Samples

Check domestic-flight CCC requirements, Shenzhen Airlines' battery limits and the transport questions to settle before buying hardware samples.

Domestic-flight check
A clear CCC / 3C mark and no applicable recall
Shenzhen Airlines power-bank limit
Two per passenger, subject to energy and personal-use requirements
Before buying samples
Confirm the transport route with the carrier

Before buying a power bank in Huaqiangbei (华强北), check the rules for every flight on your way home. A useful purchase can become difficult to transport if its markings, energy rating or intended use do not meet the carrier’s requirements.

This guide was checked on 21 October 2026. It separates the Civil Aviation Administration of China’s domestic-flight notice from the published requirements of Shenzhen Airlines (深圳航空). Use your operating airline’s current instructions for your own journey, including connecting flights.

Check the CCC mark before a domestic flight

CAAC’s notice prohibits power banks without a CCC mark, with an unclear mark, or belonging to recalled models or batches on domestic flights from 28 June 2025. The Chinese term to recognise is 3C标识; power bank is 充电宝.

Read the actual device label before paying and check the manufacturer’s recall information for the exact model and batch. A seller’s claim that a product is suitable for travel is not a substitute for checking your itinerary. The CAAC notice concerns domestic flights; confirm the requirements separately for an international flight or a departure from Hong Kong.

Shenzhen Airlines: quantity, energy and packing

The airline’s battery guidance gives the following power-bank limits:

Rated energy of each power bank Published requirement
Up to and including 100 Wh No airline approval required, subject to the other conditions
Over 100 Wh, up to and including 160 Wh Declare at check-in; inspection and approval required
Over 160 Wh Not permitted

The airline’s conditions of carriage limit passengers to two power banks regardless of energy rating. They must be for personal use and carried in hand baggage, never checked baggage. Spare batteries require individual short-circuit protection, such as a protective case or insulating exposed terminals.

On board, Shenzhen Airlines prohibits charging power banks or using them to power other devices; switches must stay off. Power banks and spare lithium batteries must stay out of overhead bins, in hand baggage under the seat ahead or another designated location. Follow crew instructions.

If your cabin bag is taken for hold loading, tell staff that it contains batteries and remove the items that must remain in the cabin before handing it over.

Read Wh, not just the large capacity number

The airline gives this conversion: Wh = Ah × nominal battery voltage, with 1,000 mAh = 1 Ah. For example, a battery labelled 10,000 mAh at 3.7 V works out to 37 Wh. Use the marked nominal battery voltage, rather than guessing from a USB output specification.

A calculation only helps establish energy. It does not establish certification, recall status, personal-use eligibility or permission from every carrier on your route. Ask the airline if the label leaves the rating uncertain.

Hardware buyers: settle sample transport before payment

Shenzhen Airlines’ September 2026 conditions of carriage, section 6.3.5.1, prohibit lithium batteries and power banks carried for non-personal use. Treat this as a decision to resolve before purchasing commercial samples: a small quantity or a rating under 100 Wh does not by itself make a business sample eligible as passenger baggage.

For a sourcing trip, my suggested sequence is:

  1. Ask the supplier for the exact model, battery specifications, label photos and intended sample quantity.
  2. Tell the operating airline what the items are and how you will use them; request a clear answer for your itinerary.
  3. If passenger carriage is unsuitable, ask the supplier and a carrier qualified to handle the goods about a separate shipment, required documents and cost.
  4. Agree who will arrange transport before paying for samples or promising a delivery date to your team.

Keep the answer with the quotation and sample records. For prototypes, loose cells or unfamiliar battery packs, seek a product-specific transport assessment. This passenger guide does not establish a cargo-shipping procedure or customs clearance.

Use the hardware manufacturing guide to prepare your supplier brief and the Huaqiangbei guide for purchase checks. Once your baggage plan is settled, the airport transfer guide helps with the journey to Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (深圳宝安国际机场).
