A foreign passport is an accepted identity document for a Shenzhen City of Libraries reader card (深圳市图书馆之城读者证). For a first application, plan a visit to a staffed desk rather than assuming an online form or self-service machine will accept your passport.
A practical starting point in Nanshan
Nanshan Library’s application guidance, dated 17 March 2026, explicitly includes foreign nationals. It directs applicants using passports or other valid documents to the main library or branch service desks to complete an application form.
Save Nanshan Library (南山图书馆), 176 Changxing Road, Nanshan (南山区常兴路176号). Its published telephone number is 0755-26520380. Staffed applications follow the relevant library’s normal opening hours: check your chosen branch before travelling.
The library’s online first-time application route requires Chinese citizenship, a second-generation Chinese ID, facial recognition and a Shenzhen IP location. Do not treat a failure on that route as evidence that passport holders are ineligible.
Use the Nanshan district guide for area context and the metro guide to plan the journey to the exact branch, not just a similarly named library.
Ask these questions at the desk
My suggested checklist is:
- Show your valid passport and ask for the reader-card application form.
- Say whether you want Chinese books, original-language foreign books or only reading access.
- Ask which card option fits that use, and whether a deposit is required.
- Confirm how to sign in, renew loans and see the due date with your particular account.
- Before leaving with a book, check the return location and save the loan record.
A useful sentence to show staff is: 我想用护照办理读者证,请问需要哪些材料? — “I’d like to apply for a reader card with my passport. What documents do I need?”
Do not assume one borrowing limit applies everywhere
The official pages checked on 18 October 2026 do not give matching borrowing allowances and loan periods. Nanshan’s card page and the University Town Library’s unified-service guide differ. This guide therefore does not promise a citywide quota or number of days: ask staff to confirm the terms attached to your card and use the actual due date shown for each loan.
The unified-service guide says one person may hold one personal City of Libraries card. It describes returns across participating libraries, but identifies exceptions for periodicals, audiovisual items, Braille and certain other materials. Ask before assuming any item can be left at any branch.
If you already have a card, take it with you rather than starting another application. The same guide advises changing the initial borrowing password and promptly reporting a lost card through the library’s service channels.
Make the first visit a setup visit
Allow time to sort out the account before planning a long reading session. I would borrow just one item initially, confirm that it appears in the account and set a personal reminder before its due date. Ask staff about access to any particular digital resource you want; a card should not be taken as a promise of unrestricted remote access to every database.
