For urgent symptoms, seek appropriate medical care rather than spending time comparing online reviews. For routine care, identify the right department, confirm language support and understand how payment or insurance approval works before the appointment. Shenzhen has municipal, district and private options, but service and English availability vary by facility and shift.
Can I find an English-speaking doctor or dentist?
Yes, but do not assume every department or appointment has English support. Contact the specific facility and ask whether the relevant specialist can consult in English at the intended time. “International department” can describe different services and fee structures.
For a dentist, ask whether the clinic routinely performs the required procedure, what imaging or laboratory work is separate, and who will provide follow-up if you leave Shenzhen.
Public hospital or private clinic?
A major public hospital may offer broad specialist and emergency capability, while a private or international clinic may provide easier language support and appointment handling. The right choice depends on urgency, speciality, insurance and the level of care needed.
Do not choose a small clinic solely because it is convenient when symptoms may require emergency or specialist resources. Conversely, a major hospital can be inefficient for a simple, non-urgent need if a suitable primary-care option is available.
What should I prepare?
Medical visit checklist
- Identity document and a reachable phone number
- Symptoms, allergies and medication names written clearly
- Relevant test results and imaging
- Insurance card, policy contact and pre-authorisation instructions
- Two payment methods
- The hospital, department and entrance in Chinese
- A trusted interpreter for consent-heavy or complex care if needed
Use generic drug names as well as overseas brand names. Do not stop or replace prescription medication based only on a shop assistant’s suggestion.
How does payment and insurance work?
Confirm whether the provider bills the insurer directly or requires payment first and reimbursement later. Ask for itemised documents, diagnoses, prescriptions and official receipts required by the policy. “Insurance accepted” may mean reimbursement support rather than cashless treatment.
For planned treatment, request a written estimate and ask what could be added. Emergency care should not be delayed while trying to perfect paperwork.
How do I find a pharmacy?
Use a reputable pharmacy and bring the medication’s generic name, strength and formulation. Packaging and brand names may differ. Prescription rules apply, and some overseas products may not be available in the same form.
Check the label before leaving and ask how the medicine should be stored. For controlled, temperature-sensitive or critical medication, confirm import and local availability before moving to Shenzhen.
What about spas and massage businesses?
Choose a clearly identified business with current reviews, displayed services and prices. Confirm duration, room type and every added charge before treatment. Leave if the business changes the service, pressures you into a package or requests an unexplained transfer.
A massage business is not a substitute for medical assessment of an injury. Avoid treatment over infection, recent surgery or a condition that has not been medically evaluated.
How should I choose salons, barbers and repair services?
Show a reference photo, confirm the exact service and price, and ask whether product, washing or styling charges are separate. For colouring or chemical treatment, discuss allergies and patch testing. For device repair, record condition and serial numbers, remove sensitive data when possible and obtain a written repair scope.
Ratings belong to a specific branch and can age quickly. Recent, detailed reviews are more useful than a chain’s overall reputation.
What should a new resident do in advance?
Identify a nearby general hospital, an option with confirmed language support and the route your insurer expects. Store emergency contacts, allergies, medications and policy details on the phone and offline. Families should also identify an appropriate children’s hospital or maternity service before it is urgently needed.
