Shenzhen offers opportunities in technology, hardware, manufacturing, international trade, education and specialised services, but an interesting role is not automatically a lawful or good offer. Evaluate the legal employer, permission process, after-tax package, working pattern and commute before relocating.
Is it easy for foreigners to find work?
It depends on the role, qualifications, language skills and whether the employer has a genuine need and the ability to support the formal process. Specialist engineering, product, manufacturing, trade, research and certain education roles are more realistic than a generic plan to arrive and search.
A foreign face or English fluency is not a professional qualification. Strong candidates explain the scarce skill, market access or experience they add.
How should I evaluate an offer?
Request the legal entity name and a written contract or offer identifying the employing entity. Compare:
- gross and estimated net pay;
- probation terms and termination provisions;
- normal hours, overtime and travel expectations;
- bonus conditions rather than headline potential;
- social insurance and private medical coverage;
- housing or relocation support;
- annual leave and flight benefits;
- work-permit and residence responsibilities; and
- the exact office and likely commute.
Do not send money to obtain a job or work permit. Preserve recruiter messages and verify that corporate email, entity name, office and signatory are consistent.
What salary is “good” in Shenzhen?
There is no credible universal number. A good package depends on household size, tax position, housing standard, school fees, insurance, savings target and working hours. Compare the Shenzhen offer with realistic Shenzhen expenses, not a currency conversion from your home salary.
Ask for a written compensation breakdown and build a conservative budget before negotiating. If a benefit is not documented, do not value it as guaranteed.
Can I work remotely while visiting?
Do not assume that a tourist, family or other non-work status authorises employment activity in Mainland China. Immigration, employment, tax and corporate-presence questions can overlap. Obtain advice based on the work, duration, employer and your status rather than relying on a digital-nomad forum answer.
Where do professionals network?
Useful channels include industry conferences, trade fairs, university events, professional associations, incubator programmes, coworking communities and recurring technical meetups. Shenzhen’s hardware and product community is particularly relationship-driven, but quality matters more than adding hundreds of WeChat contacts.
At an event, ask what the organiser does, who attends and whether the event has a clear subject. Be cautious when a “networking” invitation quickly becomes an investment, recruitment-fee, cryptocurrency or sourcing pitch.
How do I build a network without speaking Chinese?
Start with events where the subject gives everyone a reason to talk. Prepare a short introduction explaining your work and what you are trying to learn. Follow up with context instead of sending an unexplained contact request.
Learning enough Mandarin to greet people, read company names and navigate a meeting improves trust even when the technical discussion remains in English. For supplier work, use a professional interpreter when precision matters.
What information should I protect?
Professional safety check
- Verify the company and person before sharing sensitive material
- Do not send passport copies through an unexplained group chat
- Use a written NDA or contract where appropriate, but do not treat it as the only protection
- Separate public networking materials from confidential employer information
- Confirm payment recipient and invoice details independently
- Keep account recovery and payment codes private
How does Shenzhen differ from a short business trip?
A productive trip can produce leads without proving that a permanent move works. Before relocating, test the weekday commute, office culture, expected availability, housing and healthcare. Speak separately with current or former staff where possible.
Use the moving FAQ for the arrival plan and the hardware manufacturing guide when networking has a sourcing purpose.
